Get Ready for the Upcoming Job Interview Season!

Hiring occurs throughout the year. Companies will find themselves with a need to fill positions and will take appropriate actions no matter the month of the year.  You as a candidate should recognize there are ebbs and flows to hiring and the implications you face. As the start of the new year is approaching, a surge in hiring is about to occur.

January through April are the big push!  According to an article on CNBC.com job postings increase in January compared to December each year.  This is great news! You will be able to find more opportunities from which to choose. Oh wait, guess what, you and all the other candidates!  While there are more opportunities you will face increased competition.

I don’t suggest waiting until there is less competition to interview rather I am saying be strategic about preparing for upcoming interviews.  Given the increased competition you will have to stand out even more from the crowd. If you slow walk your preparation you are setting yourself up for that disappointing email stating, “ thank you for your interest, we are going in a different direction…”  Now is the time of the year to prepare for your job interview game plan in order to differentiate yourself in the new year. Below are 3 things for you to think about as you prepare before the ball drops and 2020 is upon us.

  1.  The job interview is the greatest selling situation you will ever be involved in as you are selling your TALENT.  Talent is the key differentiator a hiring manager is searching for Yes, they want experience but not at the expense of TALENT.  You have to understand your TALENT and create a persuasive argument that highlights your TALENT

  2. If you do not practice you are decreasing your chances of being hired as others will practice.  Practicing for any big event is a critical success factor. Practicing will help you reduce nerves, increase confidence and help you create muscle memory.  Practice does not mean thinking about things! Practice means having a purpose behind everything you want to say and SAYING it out loud! You will experience the interview before it even occurs which will result in you being more agile in actual interviews

  3. Get feedback on your interviewing skills.  Hire a coach, work with them to get their feedback.  A good coach will provide feedback which will help you understand what you are saying, how it is coming across and ways to improve upon what you are doing.  You should crave feedback PRIOR to your interviews!

The issue is straightforward--with increased openings in the early part of the next year, the more competition you will face.  Practice and prepare NOW to be fully prepared THEN!
